Simulation of discharging dust grains by laser excitation of neutral atoms

چکیده
We have simulated a method for changing the charge on dust grains in plasmas by exciting a small fraction of the neutral atoms into highly excited states. The atoms can be preferentially excited near a dust grain and quickly ionized by the hot electrons in the plasma. Because the neutral atom has low speed when it is excited, the resulting positive ion strikes the dust with nearly unit efficiency and the electron is repelled into the plasma. The rate for this process can be controlled by varying the state excited and/or the density of excited atoms. Thus, this mechanism gives a controllable method for varying the dust charge without substantially changing the other plasma properties. © 2010 American Institute of Physics. doi:10.1063/1.3500290

Free-electron laser induced processes in thin molecular ice.
Intermolecular reactions in and on icy films on silicate and carbonaceous grains constitute a major route for the formation of new molecular constituents in interstellar molecular clouds. In more diffuse regions and in protoplanetary discs, energetic radiation can trigger reaction routes far from thermal equilibrium. As an analog of interstellar ice-covered dust grains, highly-oriented pyrolyti...

We study the dynamics of large, charged dust grains in turbulent giant molecular clouds (GMCs). Massive dust grains behave as aerodynamic particles in primarily neutral dense gas, and thus are able to produce dramatic small-scale fluctuations in the dust-to-gas ratio. Hopkins & Lee (2016) directly simulated the dynamics of neutral dust grains in super-sonic MHD turbulence, typical of GMCs, and ...

Introduction: We are developping a micromanipulation line and a spectroscopic method for providing chemical imagery data on Organic Matter (OM) trapped in micrometric grains (Interplanetary Dust Particles, matrix grains extracted from pristine chondrites, STARDUST samples, etc.) The general framwork of our approach is based on the complementarity of Multi Wavelength Raman spectroscopy (includin...
متن کاملModeling the Warm Ionized Interstellar Medium and Its Impact on Elemental Abundance Studies
We present model calculations of ionization fractions for elements in the warm (T ∼ 10 K), low-density photoionized interstellar medium (WIM) of the Milky Way. We model the WIM as a combination of overlapping low-excitation H II regions having n(H)/n(H) ∼> 0.8. Our adopted standard model incorporates an intrinsic elemental abundance pattern similar to that found for warm neutral clouds in the G...
متن کاملAdsorption of Astrochemically Relevant Molecules on Interstellar
In the last few decades, astronomers have found that interstellar clouds are chemical factories, in which atoms are processed into more complex chemical species in reactions energized by starlight and fast particles. Many of the identified molecules are formed in networks of ion-molecule and neutral-neutral reactions and, at the low temperatures in the interstellar medium (-15 K), can accrete o...
